Where are you from originally?
I was born in Lincoln, NE

How many years in the symphony?
This year is my 7th year with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, although for obvious reasons it doesn’t quite feel like it!

Favorite spots around town?
My favorite restaurant is Rojo in Highland Park. Kathleen (my wife) and I really enjoy Freddy’s Wine Bar, also in the Highland Park area. For a quick meal there is a Thai restaurant in Vestavia Hills that we really enjoy eating at as well. Really great lunch specials there!

Why do you feel classical music is still relevant?
I’ve asked this question to many musicians over the past few years. I enjoy finding out why people believe in the work that we do. I think classical music is still relevant in our lives because it’s something that can connect us. In our world, when there are so many things to disagree about, coming together to hear a classical music concert can seem to put those disagreements on hold, in favor of experiencing the music together.

Desert Island playlist?
Live at the sands with Count Basie- Frank Sinatra

Musical hero?
My first trumpet teacher, Denny Schneider. I studied with him in high school. He really let me come into my own as a trumpet player. Never forced me to do anything. A warm, funny, and gentle presence. He passed away in 2016, but his influence on me and many other musicians will live on.
